Seamus Power exclusive
Seamus Power is an Irish professional golfer that turned professional in 2011 and plays on the PGA Tour. The West Waterford star played in 2016 Olympics before his first win in 2021 at the Barbasol Championship. Power is excited in playing in the 2023 Horizon Irish Open at the K Club. “Yeah it was great fun last year and looking forward to it again this year”. The last player from the island of Ireland to win the Irish Open was Rory McIlroy in 2016 and it would be fantastic if the 2023 edition was won by an Irish player. “There is a good field with the likes of Adam Scott, Luke Donald, Min Woo Lee and having Rory McIlroy to be back playing is the biggest of all”. It promises to be a great event especially with warm weather forecasted.
Power looked good for a Ryder Cup spot earlier in the Summer before he picked up a hip injury. “Around John Deere time I had a good chance but I have done nothing since” Four-time major winner McIlroy will play a vital role for Luke Donald’s men later this month at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club. “It will be interesting to see who is on it and hopefully they will have a strong team going there”. Offaly man Shane Lowry played in his first Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits in 2021 and is relying on a pick from Donald for Rome. ”I think he has a great shout and he would be a great addition to the team”.
Dubliner Padraig Harrington continues to impress as he made the halfway cut at both the Czech Masters and Omega European Masters. “Yeah Padraig is amazing and his game is fantastic”. Harrington has played on the DP World Tour, Champions Tour and PGA Tour in 2023. “He’s definitely not short of desire, he is absolutely not short of distance and his game holds up really well”. Power had a great time as he played with Harrington for two rounds at the 151st Open Championship at Royal Liverpool. “His game is class, he is such a great fella and he is amazing for Irish golf”.
The merger between LIV Tour, DP World Tour and PGA Tour will come into effect from the start of 2023/2024 season. “I don’t think anyone knows what it means yet”. Due to the rise of LIV Tour the PGA Tour were forced to come up with multiple designated events in 2023 with a prize fund of $20,000,000. “We have seen our prize money go up, we have seen our schedule and format change”. Both DP World Tour boss Keith Pelley & PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan are in control of ending the mess and creating a future for professional golfers. “I don’t know exactly what it means yet until negotiations take place”.
Power was forced to withdraw from the Genesis Scottish Open and played through pain at both the FedEx St Jude Championship and BMW Championship. “Yeah hopefully I’m not sure if I will be able to play a lot will depend on my fitness”. Power won in both 2021 & 2022 on the PGA Tour. “Yeah absolutely the wins are so special”. The West Waterford star is looking to win for a third year in a row in 2023. “I would love to get my hands on another trophy”.
