Shane Lowry played the last six holes in a disappointing +5 as Jesper Svensson wins Porsche Singapore Classic

Laguna National Golf Resort was the venue for this week’s DP World Tour Porsche Singapore Classic and first event of Asian Swing. Laguna National is a par 72 which includes three par fives on the back nine. a surprise to see LIV Tour’s Paul Casey returning to play in Singapore. Shane Lowry and Matthieu Pavon made the trip from The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass to play at Laguna National.

Lowry -8 shot rounds of 68,69,66 and headed into day four five shots behind 54 hole leader David Micheluzzi. Lowry played the final round with Haotong Li and Jesper Svensson. Lowry moved up the leaderboard to -13 after 11 holes and only one shot off the lead. Day four’s final group was Andy Sullivan-12, David Micheluzzi -13 and Sam Bairstow-12. Micheluzzi -14 was unlucky with a bad lie in a greenside bunker at 11 which resulted in a double bogey.

2019 Open Championship winner chances came to an end as he played holes 12 to 14 in +3. Svensson takes a three-shot lead at the top of leaderboard on -16 due to an eagle at 14. Svensson’s lead evaporated to one shot due to a bogey at 15 and Casey & Kiradech Aphibarnrat reached -14. The effects of playing four weeks in a row started to show as Lowry finished his round with a double bogey and a bogey. Lowry will have a couple of weeks off before heading to Augusta.

Aphibarnrat ranked 153rd in DP World Tour Rankings tied the lead on -15 due to a birdie at 16. Casey found the water at 16 which resulted in a bogey but managed to finish sixth on -13. Lowry shot a round of 72 and finished tied 29th on -8. Bairstow -12 advanced to -16 after 15 holes. Svensson shot an incredible round of 63 and set a clubhouse target of -17.

Aphibarnrat held three great putts at 16, 17 and 18 to equal Svensson on -17 due to shooting an excellent round of 64. A birdie by Bairstow was good enough to finish third on -16. Sullivan -15 and Pavon -14 both finished in the top five. Alejandro Del Ray, Micheluzzi, Shubhankar Sharma and Rhys Encoh all finished tied seventh on -12.

The play-off between Svensson and Aphibarnrat took place at the 18th hole. It remained level after two play-off holes. A par at the third play-off hole was good enough for Svensson to be confirmed as winner. A great few months for Swedish golf with the rise of Ludvig Aberg and Svensson winning his first DP World Tour event. Svensson received a winners check of $392,400 . The next stop for DP World Tour is the Hero Indian Open which starts on Thursday 28th of March.
