Due to a three and a half hour weather delay the 2024 Cognizant Classic was extended to a Monday finish
Shane Lowry shot rounds of 67, 67 & 66 to tie the lead with Austin Eckroat and David Skinns on 13 under after 54 holes. Erik Van Rooyan started his final round seven shots behind the leaders. Van Rooyan got off to a fantastic start as he was five under after five holes. Van Rooyan’s incredible start continued as he moved to 12 under after six holes. Van Rooyan finished the front nine with a birdie at eight and a par at nine to shoot an incredible score of 28.
Van Rooyan went into the lead on 14 under after a birdie at 10. Van Rooyan played holes 11 to 18 in even par to shoot a fantastic round of 63. Van Rooyan set a clubhouse target of 14 under. Shane Lowry played in the final group with David Skinns. Lowry failed to take advantage of the par five third hole and had to settle for three pars in a row. Lowry and Skinns played the first five holes in a combined three over.
Eckroat went into the lead on 15 under after two incredible birdies at the fourth and fifth hole. Eckroat played the front nine in two under to shoot 33. Last week’s Mexico Open champion Jake Knapp started his final round on eight under. Knapp started the back nine with three birdies in four holes to get within one shot of Eckroat. Knapp dropped back to 13 under after a three-putt at 15. Knapp played holes 16 to 18 in level par to finish tied fourth on 13 under.
Min Woo Lee started the final round 10 under. Lee played holes one to four in two under but returned to 10 under after a double bogey at the fifth hole. Lee played holes nine and 10 in three under to move up the leaderboard to 13 under. Lowry hit an extremely poor second shot at the eight hole which came to rest in a greenside bunker. Offaly native dropped back to 11 under after a bogey at the eight hole. Eckroat gave the chasing pack encouragement as he missed his birdie putt at the par five 10th hole.
Lowry made his first birdie of the round at 10 to reach 12 under. Lee moved to within one shot of Eckroat after a birdie at the 12th hole. Lowry’s tee shot at 11 found a penalty area which resulted in a bogey. Eckroat stretched his lead at the top of leaderboard to two shots after a birdie at 13. Lowry headed to the 12th tee five behind Eckroat.
Eckroat reached 17 under and had a three-shot lead with five holes to play. Skinns returned to 13 under after two birdies in a row at 12 and 13. Lowry kept his chances of a win alive after two birdies at 12 and 14 to reach 13 under. Eckroat dropped his first shot of day four after failing to get up and down from a greenside bunker at 14. Lee played holes 13 to 18 in level par and finished tied second with Van Rooyan on 14 under. Lowry’s challenge came to an end as he played The Bear Trap in one over.
Both Lowry and Skinns struggled playing in the final group as they both finished tied fourth on 13 under. Lowry earned $344,300 for finishing inside the top five. KH Lee and Cameron Young also finished tied fourth on 13 under. Eckroat played The Bear Trap in one under and a par at 18 was good enough to win Cognizant Classic on 17 under. Eckroat received a winners check of $1.6 million.
Andrew Novak, Alex Noren, Keith Mitchell, Billy Horschel, Martin Laird and Peter Malnati all finished tied ninth on 12 under. Rory McIlroy started his final round on seven under and shot a front nine of level par. McIlroy reached double figures after birdies at 10, 12 and 13. McIlroy shot a final round of 68 and finished tied 21st.
At DP World Tour SDC Championship Tom McKibbin shot a final round of level par and finished tied 12th. McKibbin finished six under and ended up six shots behind winner Jordan Gumberg. Leona Maguire shot a final round of 67 to finish tied 34th at HSBC Women’s World Championship. The HSBC Women’s World Championship was won by Hannah Green on 13 under.
