Dustin Johnson equals Ryder Cup record
Before the 2021 Ryder Cup started there has only been two people who have won all five matches at the Ryder Cup. Those two players are Francesco Molinari and Larry Nelson. It’s tough to win all five matches because you have to play two rounds in one day which takes a lot out of your body.
Going into the Ryder Cup there was a lot of uncertainty around Dustin Johnson’s golf game because he hasn’t really performed over the last few months. On the opening foursomes Johnson was paired with The Open Champion Collin Morikawa. Johnson was back to his best in this game as he showed that he is still the best wedge player in the world. Johnson helped USA win this game and after that he grew in believe by winning his opening game. USA captain Steve Stricker was impressed with Johnson in the morning foursomes and was sent out in the fourballs to win another point.
In the afternoon foursomes Johnson was playing really well due to the confidence he got out of winning his first game. Johnson lead by example for USA on the opening day as he got two points for USA.
On Saturday Stricker stuck with Johnson as he played again in the foursomes. Johnson was hitting the ball excellent in the foursomes by hitting both draws and fades which was amazing. With Johnson playing so well this gave the other USA players believe to win their games.
Johnson had all the momentum as he went into the fourballs on Saturday afternoon. It is mad what the Ryder Cup can do to some players. Johnson was paired with Morikawa again in the fourballs and this partnership worked really effective. It didn’t matter who Johnson played with because he lead by example which gave The Americans the incentive to give the Europeans a good thumping.
Johnson was going for five wins in the singles against Paul Casey. Casey gave Johnson a good match but Johnson used all his experience to equal the record.
They were giving out the Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin award for the best American and European player in the Ryder Cup. Johnson well deserved to win this award because he played a massive role in USA winning the Ryder Cup. With Johnson only been thirty seven he has plenty more majors to win and Ryder Cups to play in the next few years of his career.
If Johnson was able to continue the form he showed at Ryder Cup in Strokeplay he will give Rahm a run for his money for Word number one.
