A look ahead to Rory McIlroy chances at the Genesis Scottish Open and Leona Maguire goes in search of maiden major win
The Renaissance Scotland will host Genesis Scottish Open and a field that includes world number two Rory McIlroy. McIlroy had a superb finish 12 months ago with birdies at 17 &18 to win Genesis Scottish Open and will defend his title. The Northern Irishman decided to take a break after losing the US Open to Bryson DeChambeau and it will be interesting to see how he plays at The Renaissance. The Genesis Scottish Open is a warmup for McIlroy before playing Open Championship at Royal Troon.
The 7,237 yard par 70 is a course that McIlroy likes as his last bad performance was a missed cut in 2021. McIlroy’s strength is off the tee as he is ranked first on PGA Tour Driving Distance category. The lesson that McIlroy got from Butch Harmon has improved his iron play with been currently ranked 25th in Approach The Greens category. It would be great if McIlroy could shoot four positive rounds to gain momentum for the Open Championship.
Ewan Resort in France will host The Amundi Evian Championship. In 2021 Leona Maguire had her best finish at Evian Championship a tied sixth due to a sensational round of 61. It would be fantastic if Maguire could continue her good form from London and have a great week at Evian Championship. The field for this event also includes Northern Ireland’s Stephanie Meadow.
Shane Lowry who won 2019 Open Championship was spotted at Wimbledon but has decided to skip Genesis Scottish Open. Seamus Power’s best PGA Tour finish in 2024 is a tied 12th at RBC Heritage. This will be Power’s debut at Genesis Scottish Open and is coming into this event off a 17th finish at John Deere Classic. Padraig Harrington is in the field and finished tied 42nd 12 months ago. Tom McKibbin made the cut at US Open, three top 10 finishes in a row on DP World Tour and is in great form heading into this week’s Genesis Scottish Open.
Genesis the sponsor of Scottish Open attracts a global field which includes major champions Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Wyndham Clark and Brian Harman all participating. Schauffele was the victor of 2022 Scottish Open. 2024 PGA Championship winner has finished 11 times inside the top 10 on PGA Tour this year. Spieth has previous form at Renaissance with a tied 10th in 2022 but his best 2024 finish was a third back in January at The Sentry. Tommy Fleetwood could be best of the English especially with finishing tied fourth in 2022 and tied sixth 12 months ago.
