Scottie Scheffler comes up short as Chris Kirk wins The Sentry
Scheffler had a disappointing Saturday at The Sentry as he only managed a two under round. Scheffler started his final round on 18 under and three shots behind Kirk. Scheffler got off to a slow start as he played the first four holes in one over. The conditions for the final round were extremely calm at The Sentry which meant the stroke average was 66. Scheffler made his first birdie of the final round at the par five fifth hole.
Scheffler continued to get closer to the lead with birdies at both the sixth and seventh hole. Scheffler played an exceptional shot at the par three eight hole which set up a six foot putt for four birdies in a row. Scheffler unfortunately missed his birdie putt at the eight hole. Scheffler is working hard on his putting with coach Phil Kenyan but still needs to quicken technique especially under pressure in a tournament. Scheffler made it four birdies in five holes after a sensational up and down at the ninth hole to shoot a front nine of 33.
Scheffler had only 85 yards for his second shot at the 10th hole. Scheffler reached 22 under after rolling in a putt for birdie at the 10th hole. Scheffler had two golden opportunities for birdie at both the 11th and 12th hole which he failed to convert. These two birdie misses felt like the end of Scheffler’s charge to win The Sentry. Scheffler’s tee to green game was remarkable as his proximity to the hole was 15 feet after 11 holes.
The 14th played 285 yards on day four. Scheffler’s tee shot ended up in a greenside bunker but was forced to put one foot outside the sand. Scheffler did very well to get his bunker shot onto the green at the 14th but missed the birdie putt. Scheffler hit a seven iron for his second shot at the par five 15th which ended up eight feet from the hole. The world number one missed the eagle putt but tapped in a short range birdie putt.
Scheffler kept his hopes of a good finish alive after making it two birdies in a row at the 16th hole. Scheffler set up another good birdie opportunity at the 17th hole after hitting his second shot to 14 feet. Scheffler unfortunately missed his birdie putt at the 17th. Scheffler’s second shot came up short of the green at 18th hole. Scheffler played an excellent chip shot and rolled in a putt to finish with a birdie.
Scheffler finished on 25 under a shot a final round of 65. Scheffler finished in a Tie for fifth and earned $690,500. Scheffler’s consistency has been outstanding in both 2023 and 2024 as he has finished 21 times in the top 10. Scheffler will be tough to beat this year especially if he continues to improve his putting.
