What’s next for Rory McIlroy after another season escaping a major victory
Rory McIlroy who played in 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National will return to France to participate for a second time representing Ireland at upcoming Olympics. The Northern Irishman is currently third on FedEx Cup standings but has an opportunity to be in striking distance especially as it becomes a scoring system after BMW Championship. He has also dominated the DP World Tour with five Race to Dubai titles and currently holds a big lead at top of standings over Adam Scott. Historic European tournaments such as the Irish Open and BMW PGA Championship where he has also been successful in achieving victory’s and will attempt to win for a second time in September. McIlroy has still so much to play for this year including challenging for a third victory at season ending DP World Tour Championship. Hopefully an excellent end to the season will give McIlroy inspiration for a major victory and end 11 year drought in 2025.
McIlroy is currently 35 years old, from Hollywood county Down Northern Ireland and turned professional in 2007. McIlroy quickly forgot a final round collapse at Augusta in 2011 and showed resilience by winning his first major the US Open two months later in Congressional. 2011 to 2014 was a special time as McIlroy quickly racked up four major titles including two PGA Championship wins and an Open Championship victory at Hoylake. It has been a rollercoaster for McIlroy both on & off the course as in 2014 he broke up with Caroline Woznacki. Since 2014 Northern Irishman has brought several golf courses to its knees with long accurate drives especially by winning the season long PGA Tour FedEx Cup a historic three times.
McIlroy was unsuccessful with several excellent opportunities in majors including losing out on Sunday at 2018 Masters, 2022 Open Championship and 2023 US Open. The current circumstances in professional golf between PGA Tour & Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund regarding agreement on merger has been an added headache for McIlroy especially with been a spokesperson for America’s tour. this year he created more history by winning his fourth Hero Dubai Desert Classic and Wells Fargo Championship. A long 10 years without a major for McIlroy and for 68 holes of US Open it looked like it was ending until a final four-hole collapse at Pinehurst. After US Open McIlroy spent time on his own in New York then headed to Genesis Scottish Open for a tied fourth finish before a disappointing performance missing halfway cut at Royal Troon. McIlroy’s swashbuckling tee to green game has earned 40 worldwide wins, a big fan following and a role model to Northern Ireland’s hottest new young prospect Tom McKibbin.
