Wells Fargo Championship preview
Quail Hollow is a 7,558 yard par 71 and the venue for this week’s Wells Fargo Championship. This was the sixth PGA Tour Signature Event in 2024 which includes a prize fund of $20,000,000. Quail Hollow is an extremely difficult layout which includes Green Mile from hole 16 and 18 and has hosted both the Presidents Cup and PGA Championship. 69 players participated which included major champions Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark and Justin Thomas. Clark comes into 2024 edition as defending champion.
McIlroy has won the Wells Fargo Championship three times in 2010, 2015 and 2021. The 2023 edition was the first time McIlroy finished outside top 16 at Quail Hollow. McIlroy has won two tournaments so far in 2024 the Hero Dubai Desert Classic and partnering Shane Lowry at Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Driving is the strength of McIlroy’s game as he is currently ranked third in PGA Tour Driving Distance. I think McIlroy will win his fourth Wells Fargo Championship this weekend.
In the space of 12 months Clark has won Wells Fargo Championship, US Open and AT & T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The world number three has great form in 2024 Signature Events with a runner-up finish to Scottie Scheffler at both Arnold Palmer Invitational and Players Championship. Clark has no weaknesses in his game and is currently ranked second on PGA Tour Strokes Gained total. I think Clark will finish top five at Quail Hollow.
In 2023 Tommy Fleetwood finished tied fifth at Wells Fargo Championship. In 2023 Ryder Cup Fleetwood delivered with a sensational tee shot at the 16th hole and Europe were confirmed as winners. In 2024 Fleetwood won the Dubai Invitational and finished tied third at Augusta. It’s remarkable that Fleetwood still hasn’t won a PGA Tour event. I think Fleetwood will finish top five this weekend.
Jason Day was victorious at Quail Hollow in 2018. Day’s best finish in 2024 was a tied sixth at AT & T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. I think Day will finish in the top 10 at Quail Hollow. Denny McCarthy is currently ranked third in PGA Tour Scrambling category. In 2023 Wells Fargo Championship McCarthy finished in a tie for eight. I believe McCarthy will finish in the top 10 this weekend.
