Mason Mount joins Manchester United
Mason Mount is an English professional footballer. Mount returned to Chelsea in 2019 after been on loan at Derby County. The Premier League season takes place from August and runs until May. Mount played at Stamford Bridge when Chelsea were drawn to play at home. This piece will outline Mount’s rise as a footballer over the last four years.
Mount was at Chelsea since he was six years old but impressed at Derby in 2018/2019 season by scoring 11 goals. Derby lost the 2018/2019 Championship play-off final to Aston Villa and Mount signed a new five-year contract with Chelsea in July 2019. Mount made his first Chelsea appearance in the opening weekend of 2019/2020 Premier League season against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Mount scored his first Chelsea goal on the 18th of August 2019 in a 1-1 draw against Leicester City at Stamford Bridge.
2019 was a great year for Mount as he made his England senior debut as a substitute against Bulgaria in a UEFA Euro 2020 qualifier. Mount scored his first England goal against Kosovo in November 2019. Chelsea could not sign players throughout the 2019/2020 season due to a transfer ban and Mount benefited from this as he made 37 Premier League appearances. Chelsea finished fourth in 2019/2020 Premier League season and Mount was influential as he scored seven goals.
2020/2021 was a massive season for Mount with UEFA Euro 2020 taken place in June 2021 and was given a headache when Chelsea manager Frank Lampard was sacked halfway through the season. Change in management with Thomas Tuchel taken over as Chelsea manager didn’t affect Mount’s game time as he made 36 appearances in 2020/2021 Premier League. The Englishman scored six goals as Chelsea finished fourth for a second year in a row at the end of 2020/2021 Premier League. Mount scored in 2020/2021 UEFA Champions League and set up the winning goal against Manchester City in the final to receive a winner’s medal with Chelsea.
Mount was a part of England’s squad for UEFA Euro 2020. Mount didn’t let the disappointment of UEFA Euro 2020 final defeat against Italy affect him as he scored 11 goals in 2021/2022 Premier League season. Mount won the UEFA Super Cup & Club World Cup throughout the 2021/2022 season but lost both the FA Cup and EFL Cup Final to Liverpool. Chelsea off the field was under massive pressure at the end of 2021/2022 season due to Roman Abramovich selling the club but this didn’t stop Tuchel’s men finishing third in the Premier League.
Mount was a part of England’s squad for 2022 FIFA World Cup which came to an end after losing to France in the quarter-final. Mount only played 20 matches and scored three goals in 2022/2023 Premier League. Mount’s game time was limited throughout the 2022/2023 season due to multiple injuries. Chelsea now have a new manager in Mauricio Pochettino and 10 players have left The Blues so far in 2023 Summer Transfer window.
Man United had three bids rejected before Chelsea accepted a bid worth £60 million. Mount is currently 24 years old and will give Christian Eriksen competition for a starting midfield place. With Mount been young his pace and runs from midfield could cause nightmares for defender’s next season. Juan Mata was the last player to move from Chelsea to Man United and he had a successful career by scoring 47 times for the Red Devils. I’m optimistic that Mount will be good at Man United.
