Scottie Scheffler starts his Waste Management Phoenix Open title defence with a round of three under
Scheffler played his first round of 2024 Waste Management Phoenix Open with Wyndham Clark and Hideki Matsuyama. Scheffler only played six holes on day one due to a three and a half hour weather delay. Day two’s action was delayed due to frost and Scheffler resumed his first round on hole seven. Scheffler achieved pars at seven, eight and nine. 2022 Masters champion played his front nine in one under.
Scheffler held a great par putt at hole 10 to remain one under. The 11th hole at TPC Scottsdale is a 478 yard par four and Scheffler managed to escape with a par. Scheffler’s tee shot at the 202 yard par three 12th ended up in a greenside bunker and was unsuccessful with his 10 foot par effort. Scheffler was even par after 12 holes of his opening round.
The 13th hole at TPC Scottsdale is a par five and Scheffler’s second shot from 248 yards came to rest in a greenside bunker. 2022 Masters champion’s ball was plugged in the bunker but managed to give himself a 25 foot birdie putt. Scheffler finished the 13th hole with a disappointing par. Two-time Waste Management Phoenix Open champion hit an extraordinary iron shot from 182 yards and rolled in a 32 foot putt on hole 14 to reach one under. The 15th hole at TPC Scottsdale is a 551 yard par five and Scheffler’s third shot from 82 yards spun off the green. Scheffler held a four-footer for par on hole 15.
Scheffler was aggressive with his birdie effort at the iconic par three 16th hole but held a five-footer for par. Hole 17 played 338 yards on day one and Scheffler’s tee shot ended up near the green. Scheffler made his second birdie on the back nine after an excellent up and down to reach two under. Scheffler set up a closing birdie putt after an excellent second shot on hole 18. 2022 Masters champion was successful in finishing with a birdie on hole 18. Scheffler signed for an opening round of 68.
It took nearly two days to complete day one of 2024 Waste Management Phoenix Open due to several weather delays. Nick Taylor is leading after equalling the course record with an incredible round of 60. Taylor held 184 feet of putts in his round of 60. Irishman Seamus Power shot an opening round of even par. Scheffler is in good shape with three rounds to go in Phoenix. As usual Scheffler’s ball striking is amazing he just needs to hole a few more putts for birdie.
