Two big groups and first round leader Nick Taylor complete 36 holes at 2024 Waste Management Phoenix Open

Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark and Hideki Matsuyama played together again for day two. This three ball started their second round on hole 10. Scheffler started day two on three under, Clark one over and Matsuyama on two under. All three players started their second round with a par on hole 10. Day one leader Nick Taylor on 11 under started with a bogey on hole one.

The second Markee group is Cameron Young, Adam Scott and Justin Thomas. This three ball also started their second round on hole 10. Thomas started day two on two under, Young four under and Scott one over. Two-time PGA Championship winner got off to a fantastic start with a birdie on hole 10. Clark returned to level par after an excellent birdie at his second hole.

On hole two Taylor missed the fairway but achieved a fantastic up and down for par. Taylor hit a sensational wedge shot from 100 yards on hole three but was unsuccessful in returning to 11 under. Scott made his first birdie of day two after holing a 20 footer at his third hole. Clark hit a sensational iron shot and held his eagle putt to play holes 10 to 13 in three under. Scheffler started day two with five pars in a row. Clark was four under after five holes.

Clark reached four under after playing holes 10 to 15 in five under. Thomas hit an exceptional shot from the rough at his fifth hole and tapped in a short-range birdie putt to reach four under. Scheffler hit an unbelievable second shot from 243 yards at the par five 15th hole to set up an eagle opportunity but settled for birdie. Matsuyama advanced to three under after getting up and down for birdie at his sixth hole. Thomas made his third birdie of day two on hole 15 to reach five under.

The iconic 16th hole played 180 yards on day two and Scheffler, Clark & Matsuyama all escaped with pars. Scheffler’s tee shot at the reachable 321 yard par four 17th hole ended up in a penalty area but managed to avoid a bogey. Clark’s tee shot on hole 17 ended up in the rough but also manage to escape without dropping a shot. Matsuyama was the only player from this group to achieve a birdie on hole 17 to reach four under. Thomas’s chipping is outstanding as he got up and down to reach six under after eight holes. Young also achieved a birdie at hole 17 to reach five under. Taylor finished the front nine with two pars to shoot 36.

After nine holes Scheffler, Clark and Matsuyama are all on four under. At the halfway stage Thomas & Young are on six under and Scott is one under. Taylor started his back nine with a fantastic birdie to reach 11 under. Scheffler advanced to five under after a birdie at his 11th hole. Clark, Scheffler and Matsuyama all took advantage of the par five third hole with tap in birdies. Taylor was unsuccessful with his birdie effort at the par five 13th hole. Thomas reached seven under after a two-putt birdie at his 12th hole.

Taylor’s second shot from 176 yards on hole 14 ended up in a greenside bunker but was successful in achieving a par. Thomas dropped his first shot of day two on par three fourth after missing a long-range par putt. An extraordinary up and down from 108 yards as Scheffler advances to seven under after 15 holes. Taylor missed a fantastic opportunity to reach 12 under at par five 15th and had to settle for a disappointing par. Thomas responded brilliantly after a dropped shot as he returned to seven under after 14 holes.

Taylor was successful in avoiding a bogey at hole 16. Taylor became the first player on Friday to reach 321 yard par four 17th hole in one shot. Hole seven at TPC Scottsdale is a 194 yard par three and Thomas capitalised on a great tee shot to play 16 holes in six under. Scheffler’s second shot ended up 10 feet from the pin on hole eight and held his birdie putt to reach eight under. Taylor finally went under par for day two after a two putt on hole 17. Clark finished with six pars in a row to shoot a round of 65.

Matsuyama also finished with six pars in a row to shoot a round of 68. Scheffler finished with a closing par on hole nine to shoot 66. Scheffler is on eight under, Matsuyama and Clark five under after 36 holes. Taylor only hit seven fairways on day two but finished with a closing par to shoot 70. Taylor is tied for the lead with Andrew Novak on 12 under. Young finished with a closing birdie to shoot a second consecutive round of 67.

Thomas successfully two putted from 57 feet on hole nine to shoot a round of 65. Scott held a great birdie putt on hole seven to shoot a round of 69. Thomas & Young are on eight under and Scott on two under. Seamus Power shot a round of two under and is currently in a tie for 47th.
