A entertaining final day as Hideki Matsuyama wins The Genesis Invitational
Collin Morikawa started day four on two under. Morikawa played his fourth round with Sahith Theegala. Morikawa played five holes in one under. Morikawa made his second birdie after a sensational shot at 206 yard par three sixth hole. Morikawa made it three birdies in a row after holing a 13 foot putt at hole eight.
Morikawa shot an impressive front nine of 31. A back nine of one over as Morikawa finished in a tie for 19th on six under. Theegala started his final round on two under. Theegala made eight pars in a row before a birdie at the ninth to shoot 34. Theegala made one birdie and two bogeys to shoot a back nine of 37. Theegala finished in a tie for 37th on two under.
Tom Kim played his final round with Rickie Fowler. Kim and Fowler started on three under. Kim started his round with pars at the first and second hole. Fowler managed to leave the first hole with a birdie. Both Kim and Fowler took advantage of great second shots to achieve birdies at the third hole. Fowler finished the front nine with a birdie to shoot 34. Fowler played the back nine in one over and finished tied 35th on three under. Kim made two incredible birdies at par three 14th and 16th to shoot a round of 69.
Kim finished in a tie for 24th on five under. Rory McIlroy played his final round with 2024 Waste Management Phoenix Open winner Nick Taylor. McIlroy and Taylor started on four under. McIlroy achieved a fantastic up and down at the first hole to reach five under. McIlroy made it two birdies in a row at the second hole. Northern Irishman dropped back to four under after bogeys at hole four and five. Two birdies and one bogey as McIlroy shoots a back nine of one under.
McIlroy finished tied 24th on five under. Taylor had a disappointing final round of three over which included a back nine of 40. Taylor finished in a tie for 39th on one under. Ludvig Aberg started on three under. Aberg made two birdies and two bogeys to shoot a front nine of 35. Aberg made three remarkable birdies at 14,15 and 18 to shoot 68.
Aberg finished tied 19th on six under. Tommy Fleetwood began his fourth round on four under. Fleetwood took advantage of the reachable par five first with a birdie. Fleetwood started the back nine with four birdies in five holes to reach eight under. Fleetwood’s final birdie on day four came at 17 before finishing with a closing bogey. Fleetwood shot a final round of 67 and finished tied 10th on eight under.
Seamus Power started on four under. Power held his third shot from off the green to start with an opening eagle. Power’s first bogey of day four came at the third hole. Power made two birdies and three bogeys on the back nine to shoot 37. Power finished on four under and in a tie for 31st. Scottie Scheffler played his final round with Max Homa. Scheffler and Homa started their final round on five under.
Both Scheffler and Homa started with two pars. Scheffler hit his second shot to five feet at the third hole and held his birdie putt. Scheffler made three birdies and one bogey to shoot a back nine of 34. Scheffler finished tied 10th on eight under. Homa made three birdies in a row to reach eight under after seven holes. Homa shot a final round of 69 and finished in a tie for 18th on seven under.
Adam Hadwin started his final round on seven under. The Canadian got off to a perfect start with three birdies in a row. Hadwin made two more birdies at seven and eight to shoot a front nine of 30. Hadwin played the back nine in one under to shoot 65. Hadwin finished tied fourth on 13 under.
Jason Day started his final round four shots behind leader Cantlay. Day’s second shot from 210 yards ended up on the fringe of green at hole one. Day held an excellent birdie putt at the ninth to shoot a front nine of 34. Day’s back nine of 38 included one birdie and three bogeys. Day finished in ninth on nine under.
Harris English started his final round on 11 under. English made it two birdies in a row after an excellent shot out of the rough at his second hole. English’s highlight of the back nine was a birdie at par three 14th hole. English shot a final round of 69 and finished seventh on 12 under.
The second last group was Will Zalatoris and Luke List. Zalatoris started his final round on 12 under and List on 11 under. Zalatoris hit a great second shot at the first hole but had to settle for an opening birdie. List made a statement of intent with an eagle at the first hole. List made three more birdies at the third, fifth and seventh hole to shoot a front nine of 30.
List was leading on 16 under with nine holes to play. Zalatoris made two birdies and one bogey to shoot a front nine of 34. The final group was Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay. Cantlay started day four on 14 under and Schauffele two behind on 12 under. Both Cantlay and Schauffele failed to take advantage of the par five first and had to settle for opening pars.
Cantlay made nine pars in a row and started the back nine two behind leader List. Schaufffele made one bogey and eight pars to shoot a front nine of 36. List played 10, 11 and 12 in 15 shots as he returned to 14 under. Schauffele played holes 10 and 11 in five shots to reach 14 under. Cantlay became the third player to reach 14 under after a birdie at 11. Zalatoris made a birdie at the par five 11th hole to also reach 14 under.
Hideki Matsuyama started his final round on eight under. Matsuyama started day four with three birdies in a row. 2021 Masters champion started his back nine with three birdies at 10, 11 and 12 to reach 14 under. Cantlay, Schauffele, Zalatoris, List and Matsuyama all joint leaders on 14 under. Zalatoris took advantage of a great drive to take the lead on 15 under after a birdie on 13. Zalatoris managed to escape the 14th with a par but dropped a shot on 15.
Matsuyama hit two incredible shots at 15 and 16 to take the lead on 16 under. List made a crucial mistake on the 15th to shoot a back nine of two over and finish tied second on 14 under. Schauffele’s chances of winning came to an end with bogeys at 12, 13 and 14. Schauffele made one birdie in four holes to finish tied fourth on 13 under. Cantlay’s challenge faded with bogeys at 13 and 15 but finished in style with a birdie to shoot 72. Cantlay finished tied fourth on 13 under.
Matsuyama made his ninth birdie of day four at 17. Matsuyama had a three-shot lead playing the 18th hole. Matsuyama held a short-range par putt to shoot a back nine of 30 and a round of 62. Zalatoris failed to birdie 16 & 17 and Matsuyama was confirmed as winner. Zalatoris finished tied second on 14 under. A well-deserved win for Matsuyama.
