Patrick Cantlay takes a two-shot lead into the final round of Genesis Invitational
51 players made the halfway cut on one over. Major champions Justin Thomas, Matt Fitzpatrick and Wyndham Clark all missed the cut. News broke at the start of Saturday that Jordan Spieth was disqualified due to signing for a wrong score. Patrick Cantlay went into Saturday with a five-shot lead on 13 under.
Seamus Power started on level par. Power started with four pars which included a chip in at hole four. Collin Morikawa began day three on one under. Morikawa made four birdies and three bogeys to shoot a round of 70. Ludvig Aberg was successful in taking advantage of the par five first hole with a birdie. Aberg was on three under after rounds of 68,72 and 70.
Rory McIlroy played his third round with Adam Scott. McIlroy advanced to three under after finding the first green in two shots. The second hole at Riviera played 487 yards and McIlroy tapped in a short-range birdie putt. Scott made his second birdie of the round to reach four under after three. McIlroy made five pars in a row to remain four under. McIlroy’s first bogey came at the eight hole after a bad second shot from 95 yards. After nine holes Scott was Seven under and McIlroy three under.
Scott started the back nine with a birdie on 10 to reach six under. A two-putt at 11 was good enough for McIlroy to reach four under. Scott matched McIlroy with a birdie of his own to play 11 holes in five under. Both McIlroy and Scott dropped a shot at the tough 12th hole. McIlroy hit a fantastic nine iron and held his birdie putt at 13. McIlroy’s final birdie of day three came after an up and down at 17.
Scott finished with birdies at 17 and 18 to shoot 67. McIlroy finished with a closing par to shoot 69. Power made a fantastic eagle at the drivable par four 10th hole to reach three under. Power played the last eight holes in one under to shoot 67. Viktor Hovland began day three 10 shots behind Cantlay. Hovland’s highlight was an incredible birdie at the extremely difficult 15th hole to shoot 70.
Max Homa started on four under. Homa got off to an incredible start with a eagle at the par five first hole. Homa made two excellent birdies at the eight and 16th hole to shoot a round of 70. Tommy Fleetwood played his third round with Scottie Scheffler. Both Fleetwood and Scheffler started day three on four under. Fleetwood started with an opening birdie but dropped a shot at the par three fourth. Fleetwood finished the front nine with a stunning second shot to shoot 35.
One birdie and a bogey on the back nine as Fleetwood shoots a round of level par. Scheffler failed to take advantage of the par five first and had to settle for a disappointing par. Scheffler’s first birdie of day three came at the par three sixth. Scheffler finished the front nine with a fantastic birdie to shoot 34. Scheffler achieved birdies at 13 and 17 but also had two bogeys to shoot 70.
Cameron Davis started Saturday’s round four under. Davis’s front nine of 32 included three birdies. Davis played the back nine on Friday and Saturday in 82 shots. Davis shot a round of 73.
Harris English was 10 shots behind Cantlay at the halfway stage due to two consecutive rounds of 69. English started his third round with three birdies in a row. English’s sixth birdie on Saturday came at the extremely difficult par four 15th hole. English had to settle for a disappointing par at 17 and shot an impressive round of 65.
Xander Schauffele started on six under. Schauffele held a remarkable putt for eagle at the par five first hole to reach eight under. Schauffele achieved four birdies on the back nine at 10, 11, 16 and 17. Schauffele shot a round of 65 and is on 12 under.
Will Zalatoris started his third round on six under. Zalatoris advanced to seven under after an opening birdie. Zalatoris made birdies at the sixth and ninth hole to shoot a front nine of 33. Zalatoris made four incredible birdies to shoot a back nine of 32. Zalatoris finished day three 12 under after a round of 65.
The second last group on day three was Jason Day and Mackenzie Hughes. Day started on eight under. Day played the first and second hole in one over. Day returned to eight under after a birdie at hole six. Day made two birdies and an excellent eagle at 17 to shoot a back nine of 34. Day heads into the final round on 10 under.
Hughes started day three on eight under. Hughes advanced to nine under after an opening birdie. Hughes returned to eight under after a bogey at the extremely difficult par three fourth. Hughes shot a front nine of 35. A back nine of eight pars and one bogey as Hughes shoots 72. Hughes will start the final round on seven under.
The final group on Saturday was Cantlay and Luke List. List started on eight under and Cantlay 13 under. Both List and Cantlay took advantage of the par five first hole with birdies. Cantlay failed to get up and down for par at the third hole. Cantlay achieved pars at four, five, six, seven, eight and nine to shoot 35. List made eight pars in a row to shoot a front nine of one under.
The drivable par four 10th at Riviera caused more drama as List started his back nine with a bogey. Cantlay had 261 yards for his second shot at the par five 11th hole. A two-putt was good enough for Cantlay to birdie 11. List was unsuccessful in taking advantage of 11 and had to settle for par. Cantlay took advantage of a great drive and held his birdie putt at 13 to reach 15 under. List matched Cantlay with a birdie of his own at 13.
List made it two birdies in a row at 14. Both List and Cantlay managed to escape 15 with pars. List missed the green at 16 but was successful in avoiding a bogey. The 17th hole at Riviera is a 570 yard par five. Cantlay made a mess of 17 with missing the fairway with his tee shot then followed it up with a poor third shot. A weak chip and a par miss would result in a frustrating bogey for Cantlay. List managed to leave 17 with a birdie.
List hit a nine iron for his second shot at 18 which came to rest at the back of green. Cantlay’s pitching wedge failed to find the green at 18. Cantlay played an exceptional chip shot and held a great par putt to shoot 70. List finished his third round with a closing par to shoot 68. Cantlay 14 and List 11 under.
