Xander Schauffele -17 takes a one-shot lead into the final round of Players Championship
Day three’s final group was 36 hole leader Wyndham Clark -14 and Xander Schauffele -10. Clark reached -15 after a sensational birdie at the first hole. Schauffele reduced the deposit to four shots due to a birdie at the second hole . Schauffele gets within two shots of Clark after birdies at the fourth and sixth hole. Clark stretches his lead at the top of leaderboard to three due to a birdie at the seventh hole. A two-shot swing at the eight & ninth hole as Schauffele reached -14 and only one behind Clark.
Clark found the water with his tee shot at 12 but managed to achieve a par. Schauffele held his birdie putt at 12 to tie the lead with Clark on -16. Schauffele made his seventh birdie of day three at 14 to take the lead on -17. Schauffele was unsuccessful with his birdie effort at 16and had company in Clark at the top of leaderboard on -17. Clark found the water with his tee shot at 123 yard island green 17th hole. Clark showed character as he managed to only drop one shot at 17. Schauffele managed to avoid a bogey at 17 and remain -17.
Schauffele finished with a par to shoot an incredible -7 round of 65. Clark is Schauffele’s nearest challenger on -16. Brian Harman -7 made his second birdie of the round at four to reach -9. Harman dropped a shot at the ninth hole but still managed to shoot a -3 front nine. 2023 The Open Championship winner moved up the leaderboard to -12 after two birdies in a row at 10 and 11. Harman finished day three on -15 due to shooting an impressive -8 round of 64.
Matt Fitzpatrick -9 played his third round with Nick Taylor. 2022 US Open champion got off to a quick start with a birdie at the first hole. Fitzpatrick reached -11 due to a birdie at 15. Fitzpatrick finished with two birdies in a row at 17 and 18 to shoot a sensational -4 round of 68. The Englishman will start day four on -13 and within four shots of Schauffele.
Defending champion Scottie Scheffler was alongside Corey Conners for day three. Scheffler remained -8 after a par at the first hole. Scheffler made his first birdie of day three at the second hole to reach -9. It’s incredible that Scheffler is -11 due to playing with a neck injury. Scheffler shoots his 17th round in the 60s in three months to finish -12.
Nate Lashley moved up the leaderboard to -10 after a birdie at the 17th hole. Lashley finished on -11 after an amazing birdie at 18. Hideki Matsuyama reached -10 due to a birdie at the 17th hole. Matsuyama finished with a par to remain -10.
Ludvig Aberg played 14 holes in -5 to reach -9. Aberg played holes 15 to 18 in even par to finish day three on -9. Rory McIlroy -6 played his third round with Sepp Straka. McIlroy made his 16th birdie in 38 holes to reach -7. McIlroy finished the front nine with a par to shoot a disappointing 36. McIlroy dropped back to six under due to a double bogey at 14. McIlroy kept his hopes of a win alive with playing holes 16 to 18 in -3 to finish -9.
