Wyndham Clark -14 takes a four-shot lead into the final 36 holes of Players Championship
The headline players from day two’s morning action was major champions Scottie Scheffler -5, Matt Fitzpatrick -6 and Clark -7. Clark’s playing partners for day two were Fitzpatrick & Max Homa. This group started their round at the 10th hole. Clark played his front nine in 35 shots which included a birdie at the iconic 17th hole. 2023 US Open champion started his back nine with four incredible birdies in a row to reach -12. Clark finished with two birdies in four holes to shoot a second consecutive -7 round of 65.
Scheffler played with Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler for a second day in a row. Scheffler -5 got off to an incredible start with a birdie at his opening hole to reach -6. 2023 Players Championship winner shot a -3 round of 69. So far in 2024 Scheffler has shot 16 rounds in the 60s. World number one heads into day three six shots behind halfway leader Clark.
2022 US Open champion Fitzpatrick -6 played his front nine in 34 shots to reach -8. Fitzpatrick started his back nine with two birdies but dropped back to -8 after a double bogey at the fourth hole. The Englishman shot a round of 69 and is only five shots behind Clark.
The marquee group in the afternoon was Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Viktor Hovland. McIlroy -7 started his second round seven behind Clark. McIlroy’s front nine of 35 included four birdies and three bogeys. 2019 Players Championship winner failed to achieve a birdie at the par five 11th and 16th hole. McIlroy finished his round with a par to shoot a 73. McIlroy -6 made 15 birdies, five bogeys & two double bogeys in 36 holes.
Xander Schauffele -7 played the front nine in -1 to reach -8. Schauffele’s back nine of 34 included an eagle to shoot a -3 round of 69. Clark’s nearest challenger is Schauffele on -10.
Canadians Nick Taylor -10 and Corey Conners -9 are both in striking distance of Clark. 2023 The Open champion Brian Harman has returned to form and heads into day three on -7. Irishmen Seamus Power and Shane Lowry are both on -3 after shooting rounds in the 60s. -1 was the halfway cut which resulted in major champions Spieth, Thomas and Justin Rose all missing the final 36 holes.
