Another great finish for Rory McIlroy at the FedEx St Jude Classic

Rory McIlroy started his final round five shots behind the leader Lucas Glover. “Yeah, it was nice to feel like I had a chance”. The Northern Irishman started with a par before a birdie at the second hole. The third is a par five and McIlroy played a great third shot out of a bunker and converted a short range putt for birdie. The fourth is a 187 yard par three and McIlroy achieved three birdies in a row after holing a medium ranged putt for birdie.

McIlroy kept the momentum in his favour with two good pars at the fifth and seventh hole. McIlroy shot a front nine of three under. His second shot at the 10th hole ended up at the back of the green and had to settle for a par. McIlroy was fortunate with his tee shot at the 11th and missed his putt for a birdie. The 12th proved to be difficult with water but the Northern Irishman made a good two putt for par to keep himself in with a chance with six holes to go.

McIlroy reached 13 under after holing a 24 foot putt for birdie on the 13th hole. “Yeah, I holed a really nice one on 13”. The 14th at TPC Southwind is an extremely difficult par three with water but McIlroy achieved a good par. The 16th hole is a par five in Memphis and only played 511 yards on the final day. McIlroy missed the fairway but played a good shot to the back of the green at the par five. The Northern Irishman was frustrated as he only got a par at the par five 16th.

McIlroy finished in style as he hit a 344 yard drive at the 18th and then holed a 19 foot putt for birdie. “A really nice one on 18”. McIlroy finished on 14 under after a final round of 65. “Overall it was my best round of the week”. McIlroy got a half inch off his putter earlier in the tournament and this proved to be vital as he holed 105 feet in putts on the final round. “It absolutely does. Where that right hand sits, it makes a huge difference”.

McIlroy finished in a tie for third and earned $1,160,00. McIlroy is currently third in the FedEx Cup rankings with two events to go which are the BMW Championship and Tour Championship. “I've been on a nice little run and I'm feeling really good about everything”. McIlroy will completer another bit of history if he manages to win his fourth FedEx Cup in a couple of weeks.

The other Irish player that played at Memphis was Seamus Power who finished in a tie for 66th.
