Shopping in a Supermarket with a visual impairment

When going to a supermarket I would either have to go with someone because to tell me where the products are or ask for assistance which isn’t always on use because if the shop is busy they won’t have staff to do it or if the shop is quiet not many people are working so unfortunely it’s unrelable

I had a bad experience lately in Tesco when I asked for assistance a foreign lady came along and it was terrible because she hadn’t got a clue what items I wanted because she couldn’t understand what I was saying and she wouldn’t let me use my cane and she was grabbing thinking that |I was an invalid which I’m not where not invalids just because I can’t see doesn’t mean I can’t walk which is wrong they are only there for assistance not for guiding which was wrong so just be careful of that

I love to go to the shops and pick out everything myself but unfortunely it’s not practical so it’s no harm asking for assistance and most times they will help you and do a good job but there is a small chance that ou will get someone that doesn’t speak English so you will have to be mindful of that but you need to give yourself extra time when you go to the shops been visually impaired because the assistance takes time and it’s not something that you can rush

I think that it’s a great service that shops do because it’s giving me independence of going the shops myself which is great because you can’t keep saying that you can’t shop yourself just because your visually impaired this is not the case and it’s giving me the freedom of getting what I want and need and not writing a list and asking someone to go for you that is not the way

With technology moving so fast you can order your shopping online and then you can pay for it by card and it will deliver to your door which is handy because if your walking to the supermarket and using the cane a lot to manage on the way back trying to use the cane plus carry lots of heavy bags so it’s handy and it cuts all that out
