Scottie Scheffler -6 is tied for the lead heading into Saturday at Augusta
The first day of 2024 Masters didn’t kick off until 3:30pm due to a two and a half hour weather delay. 27 players had to complete their first round early on Friday morning. Round 2 scoring average was 76.08 due to winds gusting over 40 miles per hour (mph). Only 14 players are under par after 36 holes of play. +6 made the halfway cut and major champions Justin Rose, Wyndham Clark, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Sergio Garcia all settled for a disappointing weekend off.
World Number one Scottie Scheffler played his first two rounds with Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele. 2022 Masters champion got off to a steady start with shooting a front nine of -2. Scheffler’s back nine of -4 included holing a bunker shot for birdie at the par three 12th hole. Scheffler shot an impressive opening round of -6 and started day two one shot behind -7 leader DeChambeau.
Scheffler showed an exhibition of short game play as he battled to shoot a front nine of 36 on Friday. The American took advantage of a 350 yard drive at 10 to start the back nine with a birdie to reach -7. Scheffler played the back nine par 5s in a disappointing +1 which included finding a penalty area at 13. 2022 Masters champion shot an incredible round of 72 in difficult conditions. Scheffler -6 will play in Saturday’s second last group with 2023 DP World Tour Championship winner Nicolai Hojgaard.
