Round 2 review of AT &T Pebble Beach Pro-Am
Overnight leader Thomas Detry started his second round on the 10th hole. Detry opened up his second round with a birdie at the 10th hole. Detry’s second birdie at Pebble Beach came at the par five 14th hole. The Belgian’s ninth hole was the par five 18th and managed to get up and down to shoot a front nine of three under. Detry reached 13 under after a birdie on his 11th hole. The Belgian’s first mistake on day two came after an bogey at his 13th hole.
Detry dropped two shots in a row at his 14th hole. The Belgian managed to finish with four pars in a row. Detry is on 11 under after a second round of 70. Patrick Cantlay opened up with a round of 64. Cantlay got off to a perfect start with a kick in birdie at hole one after a sensational iron shot. The American dropped a shot at hole five but responded brillantly with birdies at the sixth and seventh hole. Cantlay played a poor third shot and had to settle for a disappointing par at the par five 14th hole. Cantlay missed a great opportunity as he was unsuccessful with his birdie effort at the 16th hole.
Scottie Scheffler started his second round on four under. Scheffler got off to a fantastic start with birdies at the first and second hole. Scheffler’s putting stroke is continuing to impress as he rolled in a birdie putt to reach eight under after eight holes. 2022 Masters champion hit an excellent shot at the 11th hole and held his birdie putt to reach nine under. Scheffler was unsuccessful in achieving a birdie at the par five 14th hole. Scheffler held a long-range birdie putt to reach 10 under after 17 holes.
Scheffler had 235 yards for his second shot on hole 18 which came to rest near the green. The American held an impressive six footer to shoot a second round of 65. Scheffler is on 11 under. Cantlay put his tee shot into the water but played a sensational chip shot to get up and down for a closing par. Cantlay is on 10 under after shooting a round of 70.
Ludvig Aberg only turned professional in 2023 but has already won on the DP World Tour & PGA Tour and has also played in a Ryder Cup. Aberg shot a first round of four under and played his second round at Pebble Beach. Aberg’s putting was extraordinary as he played his first five holes in four under. The Swedish star had a disappointing par at the par five sixth hole but bounced back immediately with a birdie at hole seven. Aberg reached 10 under after rolling in a short-range putt at the 11th hole. The Swedish star played 14 holes in seven under after a two-putt birdie.
Aberg had a opportunity to reach 12 under but failed to birdie his final hole. Aberg is also on 11 under after shooting a round of 65. Justin Thomas started his second round on four under. Thomas got off to a quick start as he was four under after seven holes. Thomas managed to keep a bogey off his card before finishing with a closing birdie. It’s great to see Thomas playing well again and goes into the weekend on nine under.
Matthieu Pavon won the recent Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. Pavon started his second round on seven under. Pavon played his second round at Spyglass Hills and shot a front nine of two over. The French man played his back nine in four under to shoot a round of 70. Pavon goes into the weekend on nine under. Emiliano Grillo is also on nine under after a round of 69.
Keegan Bradley and Beau Hossler make up the top 10 on eight under. Matt Fitzpatrick shot a second round of four under which included four birdies in a row. Fitzpatrick is on seven under in a tie for 10th. Collin Morikawa is also in tied 10th after playing his back nine in two under. Rickie Fowler played his front nine in three under but made a massive mistake as he started his back nine with a three putt from short-range for double bogey. Fowler finished with eight straight pars to go into round three on six under.
Defending champion Justin Rose shot a round of one under and is on five under in a tie for 23rd with Nicolai Hojgaard. Viktor Hovland played alongside Cantlay and it was a disappointing round of even par for the Norwegian which included four bogeys. Hovland goes into the weekend on three under. Jordan Spieth played with Thomas and 2017 AT &T Pebble Beach Pro-Am winner shot a round of three under. Spieth is in a tie for 44th on three under with Seamus Power.
Rory McIlroy started his second round on one under. The first seven holes at Pebble Beach are scorable which includes two par fives. Two poor three putts from McIlroy as he played his first two holes in one over. Four-time major champion missed another tee shot to the left which resulted in a double bogey at hole four. McIlroy rallied with birdies at the sixth and seventh hole before making another bogey on hole eight. The majority of McIlroy’s bogeys in this event are due to missed putts.
McIlroy’s second shot at the par five 14th came to rest right of the green but failed to achieve a birdie. A rare positive moment for McIlroy as he held a long-range birdie putt at the 16th hole. The Northern Irishman had sights on a strong finish but missed a good birdie opportunity at hole 17. McIlroy played a good chip shot to set up a closing birdie putt which was unsuccessful. McIlroy is on even par after shooting a round of 74. McIlroy needs a low third round as he is currently 11 shots behind the leaders.
Aberg, Scheffler and Detry go into the weekend joint leaders on 11 under. It’s set up to be a great weekend as nine players are in five shots of the lead.
