A bad finish for Rory McIlroy at 2024 AT &T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Rory McIlroy started his second round on one under. Northern Irishman played with Ludvig Aberg for a second day in a row. McIlroy had 149 yards for his second shot on hole one which ended up at the front of green. McIlroy three putted the first hole which resulted in a bogey. The second hole at Pebble Beach is a 516 yard par five and McIlroy had 186 yards for his second shot. McIlroy played the first two holes in 10 shots after a disappointing par at hole two.

McIlroy’s miss with the driver in Dubai was left and this happened again as his tee shot on hole four went out of bounds. McIlroy got off to a terrible start as he played four holes in three over. Four-time major champion rallied with birdies at the sixth and seventh hole. A poor iron shot on hole eight which came to rest in a greenside bunker and McIlroy failed to achieve a par. McIlroy shot a front nine of two over.

McIlroy started the back nine with two pars before another dropped shot at hole 12. Three-time FedEx Cup champion missed the par five 14th green with a iron and was unsuccessful in achieving a birdie. McIlroy finally made his first birdie of the back nine on hole 16. Northern Irishman’s second shot ended up near the green on hole 18. McIlroy was unsuccessful in finishing day two with a birdie. McIlroy only played the four par fives in one under. McIlroy shot a second round of 74.

McIlroy started day three on hole 10 playing with Adam Schenk and Xander Schauffele. Four-time major champion put his second shot on hole 10 into a bunker and failed to achieve a par. McIlroy returned to one over after a birdie at 204 yard par three 12th. McIlroy struggled to take advantage of the par fives as he had another disappointing par at hole 14. The 17th hole played 182 yards and McIlroy made a birdie after a fantastic tee shot.

Northern Irishman’s final hole on the front nine was hole 18 and he pulled his second shot into a penalty area. Another par five played poorly as McIlroy dropped a shot on hole 18. McIlroy played his front nine in even par. Three-time FedEx Cup champion made four birdies in seven holes on his back nine. McIlroy dropped a shot at his final hole to shoot a third round of 69.

The final round at Pebble Beach was cancelled due to bad weather on both Sunday and Monday. After three rounds McIlroy was in a tie for 66th on two under. A terrible finish considering McIlroy was leading on day one after 14 holes of his round. McIlroy needs to tidy up his iron game and putting before he tees it up at The Genesis Invitational. This was only McIlroy’s second time playing at Pebble Beach and it would be a surprise if he plays this tournament again in 2025.
