Low scoring was the order of play on day three at Pebble Beach
Ludvig Aberg, Scottie Scheffler, Thomas Detry all started day three on 11 under and played together in the final group. Scheffler nearly went out of bounds with his tee shot but stayed in play and was extremely lucky that his second shot ended up in a fairway bunker. Scheffler hit an extraordinary third shot and held a fantastic par putt to avoid a bogey. Both Detry and Aberg achieved pars on hole one. The second hole at Pebble Beach is a reachable par five and all three players ended up with disappointing pars. Aberg hit a sensational wedge shot and made his first birdie of day three on hole four. Detry also took advantage of hole four as the Belgian reached 12 under.
Scheffler opened up with five pars before a birdie at the par five sixth hole. Detry didn’t get nervous playing in the final group as he made it three birdies in a row on hole six. Aberg managed a great up and down from a greenside bunker to reach 13 under after six holes. Aberg made his third birdie on day three after a sensational iron shot at the extremely difficult par four eight hole. Detry achieved a great par at the eight hole and shot a front nine of 33. Scheffler shot a front nine of even par after missing a par putt on hole nine. Aberg shot a front nine of three under.
Scheffler hit an excellent shot from a fairway bunker at the 10th hole and held his birdie putt to reach 12 under. Aberg continued to impress as he reached 15 under after a birdie on the par four 13th hole. Detry started the back nine with three pars before a bogey on hole 13. Scheffler hit a fantastic wedge shot from 87 yards at the par five 14th hole but missed a short-range birdie putt. Aberg’s second shot at the 14th came to rest in a greenside bunker and was unsuccessful in achieving a birdie. Detry was the only player from this group to achieve a birdie on hole 14.
Scheffler had another great opportunity for birdie at the 15th which he failed to convert. Aberg was unsuccessful in capitalising on a great iron shot at the 16th hole. Detry reached the 18th tee on 14 under after pars at 15, 16 and 17. Aberg and Scheffler settled for par on hole 17. Aberg hit an incredible long-iron shot from 248 yards to set up a closing eagle opportunity. Scheffler’s second shot at the 18th hole came to rest in a greenside bunker.
Detry was forced to lay up and settled for a closing par to shoot 69. Detry goes into the final round on 14 under. Scheffler finished with a closing birdie after a fantastic up and down. Scheffler shot 70 and goes into round four on 13 under. Aberg two putted from long-range to shoot an impressive round of 67. Aberg is on 16 under after 54 holes.
2023 US Open champion Wyndham Clark started round three on five under. Clark got off to a fantastic start as he played the first two holes in two under. Clark made his second eagle on round three at the sixth hole. The American played seven holes in six under after a tap in birdie. Clark held two sensational long-range birdie putts at the eight and ninth hole to shoot a front nine of eight under. A sensational nine holes from Clark with shooting 28.
Clark continued to roll in putts as he made it five birdies in a row at the 11th hole. Clark duffed his tee shot on hole 12 and held an incredible putt from long-range just to drop one shot. The American responded brillantly with birdies on hole 13 and 14. Clark needed to make two birdies in four holes to shoot 59. Clark’s birdie putts at 16 and 17 were a half a roll from going in. Clark hit an extraordinary tee shot at the 18th hole and set up an eagle after an excellent second shot.
An eagle at the 18th hole would have been good enough for Clark to break 60. The American’s eagle effort ended up half a roll from the cup and had to settle for a closing birdie. Clark shot an incredible round of 12 under and has a one-shot lead on 17 under. Matthieu Pavon started day three with two birdies in a row at hole two and three. Pavon dropped a shot on hole five but responded with a birdie at the sixth hole and rolling in a long-range effort at hole seven.
Pavon finished the front nine with an exceptional birdie to shoot 33. Pavon started the back nine with two birdies in three holes to reach 14 under. 2024 Farmers Insurance Open winner hit two fantastic shots at the 18th hole and two-putted for birdie to finish on 15 under. Mark Hubbard played the front nine in four under which included three birdies in a row at hole one, two and three. Hubbard started the back nine with three birdies in four holes. Hubbard finished with a birdie to shoot 65 and goes into the final round on 14 under.
Jason Day opened up with four birdies in a row before a bogey on hole five. Day made a birdie on hole six and followed it up with three pars to shoot a front nine of 32. Day played hole 10 to 14 in four under which included a sensational eagle at the par four 11th. Day finished with a birdie to shoot a round of 63. Day is four behind with one round to go.
Justin Thomas took advantage of the early scorable holes as he played hole one to six in three under. Thomas’s only birdie on the back nine was at hole 15 and is also in tied sixth on 13 under. The fourth player in tied sixth on 13 under is Tom Hoge. Sam Burns makes up the top 10 on 12 under.
Seamus Power had seven birdies in his round of 68 and is in a tie for31st on seven under. Rory McIlroy started his third round on hole 10. McIlroy returned to one over after a birdie on his third hole. McIlroy made a great birdie on hole 17 but finished his front nine with a bad bogey on hole 18.
McIlroy made four birdies on his back nine to shoot three under. McIlroy is in a tie for 66th and 15 shots behind Clark. The top 10 players made a combined 56 birdies on day three. Due to bad weather the final round of AT &T Pebble Beach Pro-Am was cancelled and Clark was announced as winner.
